Worried

If you're here for the Party... see below for my party post and welcome!

I'm worried about Hope (my youngest - six months). Yesterday she woke up from her afternoon nap with a fever of 39.8 C (over 103 F for you Yanks) and very agitated, panting and rapid breathing and then holding her breath sometimes, and she vomitted, too. The same thing happened in the middle of the night on Friday night/Saturday morning. I didn't take her temperature then and wrongly assumed it was teething related.

Yesterday I got worried. I called Telehealth Ontario and then after going through everything with the nurse, she told me to take her to Emergency due to the breathing thing. When I arrived at CHEO I was told that it was a 3 to 4 hour wait and of course by then the ibuprofen had kicked in and she seemed fine. I went home and got an appointment at our after hours clinic last night. The pediactrician there said that all the symptoms are related to the fever and her ears and chest are fine. He didn't give me a reason for the fever happening but said to check in with my family doctor in the next couple of days. Then at 5:00 this morning it started again.

Now I'm getting pretty concerned. There has to be a reason and it just doesn't sit well with me. I really feel that something is wrong and I'm getting nowhere so far. She seems like she is trying to push something out of her in the middle of the fever - her breathing sounds like she is exerting effort. Any ideas out there?

I'll be going to our family doc today. Hopefully I'll get some answers.

Yikes! Doesn't sound pleasant for her. Gwen had a fever and vomited at the beginning of her cold/teething session. I chalked it up to the cold since it was more or less the same thing Gillian experienced. But there was no shortness of breath.

I'm glad you are going to your doctor. I look forward to the update when you get back.

Try not to worry too much. Remember, fevers are a good thing, a sign the body is fighting off infection. I'm sure your doctor will allay your fears.

Good luck!

Wow, I'm sorry you're dealing with this. It's never easy to have sick kids, ESPECIALLY when you don't know what the culprit is! I am just stopping by from the blog party. Hope you get some answers today. Best of luck.

We're at our warmest in the middle of the night - after 2am and before 6am (something along those times). My mil was a peds nurse. Is your Doc part of the family health network plan where you can call who is on call and see a doctor at their office? I'm in Ontario too that's why I ask. I hope you find your answer, 6 months is too young to let a fever continue - one to two days is one thing but longer is not good. I just finished a week of fevers for my 4 year old, "a virus that just had to work itself out" says my doc...

keep pushing for your answer - moms are always right!!!! and we have every right to know what's going on with our kids.

It's probably just a cold or teething. Definitely check with your doctor though.

I hope she's feeling better soon.

Can't help you on this one... but that's a heck of a fever! Speaking of someone who spent the weekend shivering and sweating with a 38.2 fever (c; The good sign is that it responds to ibuprofen and that she gets better in the day. All the big bad ugly things we learn about (meningitis, epiglottitis, etc. etc.) don't get better, so hopefully that's a happy thought to get you through until you see the doc
