I did it last year with the girls. I simply added a slip of paper into each day of our Playmobil advent calendar (which I LOVE). Each slip had an activity for us to do that day. Some were more involved like decorating the house for Christmas or making a gingerbread house. Some were simple like "go play in the snow" or "read a Christmas book". This year I have some great plans in store and I've been spending some time thinking about it.
One of the very exciting things this year is that my sister Beth and niece Kate will be visiting us from Austin from December 2 to 9 so they'll get to join in our fun for a while. I've specifically come up with some great things while they're here including:
- the Christkindl Market in Kitchener
- the outdoor Christmas pageant (with live animals!) at a local church
- a walk through the Christmas light display at Waterloo Park
- making gingerbread houses (I have some baking to do beforehand)... maybe
- some special Christmas crafts
- getting the Christmas tree and decorating it
Sounds great, doesn't it? I'll fill in the rest of the time before Christmas with some other crafts, stories, some movies, playing outside, making homemade hot chocolate, Christmas baking, etc.
I'm really getting excited for Christmas already. I'll have to pace myself or I'll be a seriously worn-out elf.

i can't wait to do this next year. i think that max is a little too young to get it. though i still plan to do some fun christmas things this year. just have to get marty on board. he's a little bah humbug-ish.
John was bah-humbugish about Christmas until we had kids who got into it and started having our own family traditions. He'll come around (especially if you can stay home for Christmas).
Mike can be too. We both really had fun with the 25 days thing. Can't wait to see how yours plays out.
what is your connection to wmtc.ca? she is such a vile woman and you seem to be a wonderful stay-at-home mum. i dont see any common denominator. do you know she won't wear a poppy for remembrance day? she's a traitor to two different countries. disgusting.
Magnolia 2000: I like the wmtc site because it informs me on things I frankly don't have time to inform myself on very often. I don't always agree with her but I always learn things, and often I do agree with her.
And as an aside, I don't wear a poppy either. I'm Mennonite, a pacifist and choose to wear the MCC button "to remember is to work for peace". I don't talk about it on the blog because it's something that would alienate some of my readers and I don't want to do that. It's not that I don't "support the troops", I just don't really want my money going to the Canadian Legion. It's just my own choice and not one that I normally share here.
I'm going to try this too, Karen! I just bought a pocket style advent calendar from Ten Thousand villages, which I hope to fill up with a note each day.
We do this too and I love it. It's easier than most people think and a ton of fun.
We have "gingerbread house" day but we just use graham crackers to build the houses. I'm sure a baker like you is horrified!, but if you run out of time, it's a good alternative. They're fast and really, it's all about the decorating anyway :).
our troops were fighting for the mennonites freedom also. and for all the goofy religions in canada too. the legion is the reason you have your freedom. wear a damn poppy.
still think youre a great mum. just reading about your days make me tired.
Oh man Lynn, I'm never horrified by time savers. Whatever makes the day a little easier....
M2000: I think we'll just have to agree to disagree. I don't want to go into all the historical reasons why I just won't do it - a Masters in History ends up colouring the way you think about everything sometimes - as does a pacifist outlook. Anyway, reading about my days makes me tired sometimes too. But I wouldn't have it any other way right now.
